My Journey with Migraines: A Personal Tale

The Start of My Migraines

As I mentioned earlier, I have a genetic disposition to migraines. Memories of my mother’s migraines often included her needing to be left alone for a day, and she would sleep them off for the most part. My migraines were triggered early on by falling off a horse and landing on my head during my junior homecoming parade. (Gracefulness has never been easy for me!) Throughout the years, the appearance of my migraines has changed.

What My Migraines Look Like

I’ve learned that everyone experiences migraines differently. I’m still not sure how doctors determine what is a migraine versus a regular headache. Mine have certainly changed over the years. Since my first ones were about 30 years ago, those details are a bit fuzzy. However, when I was about 26, they changed significantly. They started with tingling in my right hand, which would travel up my arm. By the time the tingling reached my elbow, my fingers would start clearing up. It would then travel to my face and tongue, eventually leaving my teeth with an ache like no other and a headache of epic proportions.

Today’s migraine started on my left side for the first time ever. It brought back flashbacks to when I was 26, thinking I was having a stroke. (I even asked my husband if I was speaking in full sentences!) Thankfully, it wasn’t a stroke. No matter what, they always seem to be accompanied by floaters in my eyes at the start. It’s crazy how much has changed over the years with this ever-present challenge.

What Helps My Migraines

Over the years, I’ve found a few things that help manage my migraines. Here’s my go-to list:

  • Chiropractor Visits: When I stay in alignment, my migraines tend to stay at bay.

  • Mt. Dew: I usually don’t drink soda, but for some reason, the caffeine and sugar combo in this seems to help.

  • Excedrin Migraine or Excedrin Tension Headache: I try to keep one of these on hand at all times.

  • Head Tallow Balm: This doesn’t make the migraine go away, but it helps with the severity. I’ve heard reports that it eliminates headaches for some, but unfortunately, that hasn’t been my experience. However, it absolutely takes the edge off while I wait for the migraine to pass, making it more bearable. You can purchase it here: Head Tallow Balm.

Embracing a Natural Approach

I’ve been on a journey to embrace a cleaner lifestyle. This includes using natural, handmade personal care products. I believe that what we put on our bodies matters just as much as what we put in them. That’s why I love using products like the Head Tallow Balm. It’s made with care and attention to detail, just like everything else from Countryside Creations.
